PLACES TO PLAY

CLUBS IN LIVERPOOL

You will find details of each club on the individual club pages in the ‘Places to Play’ section. New or returning players are welcome in all clubs!

The clubs are all of a relatively modest size ranging from 3 to 7 courts. The good news is that membership costs are affordable and significantly cheaper than in other parts of the country. Adult membership is generally about £150 per year and most clubs offer reductions for students, senior citizens or unwaged. All clubs run open access social mix-in sessions which you can come along free to try.

Junior membership varies from £30-£60 per year – in some clubs, such as Palmerston, Vagabonds and Mersey Bowmen, coaching sessions are included in the membership price. Palmerston also has a facility which allows parents of junior members to play free with their children.

Most of the clubs are in traditional urban or suburban locations. Of the others, Mersey Bowmen is situated in a great setting in Sefton Park and Maghull Tennis Club also operates from a park location. Liverpool Cricket Club has an imposing location in Aigburth with a county standard cricket ground and victorian style pavilion.

Every club caters for adults and juniors alike.  East Wavertree, Bohemians, Mossley Hill and Liverpool Cricket Club in particular offer well organised adult social programmes whilst Palmerston tend to specialise in younger players and has the city’s largest junior programme. New players should look at a number of clubs before deciding which best suits their needs.

INDOOR CENTRES

There are 3 indoor facilities in Liverpool. The Liverpool Tennis Centre in Wavertree is council run and is used both for Tennis and other sports. There are 6 indoor acrylic courts. The Archbishop Beck Tennis Centre in Walton is operated by the school of the same name and has 4 indoor acrylic courts. Both of these run on a pay and play basis. The David Lloyd Club in Speke has 6 indoor carpet courts. This is run on a membership basis although members don’t pay court charges.

The Liverpool Tennis Foundation are currently researching site options for a 3 court airhall in South Liverpool.

OUTDOOR SITES

Liverpool Tennis Centre has 6 outdoor courts (4 floodlit) which can be booked on a pay and play basis. Princes Park in Toxteth has 5 courts which are free to use.

Four venues: Palmerston, East Wavertree, David Lloyd Speke and Lifestyles Tennis Centre have LTA ClubMark status.

LIVERPOOL LEAGUES

The local leagues offer regular competitive tennis at all levels from beginner upwards. Liverpool’s summer league structure is one of the best organised in the UK offering a match each week over a 14 week season. All of the local clubs plus the David Lloyd Club offer teams.  Just about every regular player in the city gets involved!

The largest overall programme is at Palmerston although there is also a large open access programme offered at Liverpool Tennis Centre which is enyoting a significant revival and operates indoors.
